Blogger or wordpress- which is better for SEO?

Blogspot or WordPress - which platform to use, is one of the most controversial topic when it comes to blogging. Of course there are many blogging platform like tumblr, drupal and many more, but debate between blogspot and WordPress continues. Blogspot and WordPress are two famous and well established blogging platform but it gets confusing at times, as many bloggers use blogspot because its hassle free, and many bloggers loves WordPress, because of its powerful features.

Which one is better - Blogspot or WordPress?  Here my answer is--

BlogSpot-- Why and Why Not to Use

Blogspot is a perfect blogging platform to start with. Blogspot blogging platform is useful, If you just want to share your thoughts, or you are not blogging for money, or you want a hassle free blogging platform which doesn't require any technical skill. Blogspot has all the basic features to start a blog. It is owned and managed by Google itself. If you want to Start a Blog but doesn't want to pay for Web Hosting then blogspot is for you. But Blogspot has limitations in terms of functionality, customization, SEO benefits and control. You don't have full control on your blog if you use BlogSpot as a Blogging platform. Your blog is owned and managed by Google.

But if you are blogging to make money online, or fame, or branding yourself then blogspot is definitely not for you. You have limited access to customize your blog and can't design your blog as per your needs. Also blogspot doesn't support plugins and you can't make custom widgets for your blog until you know HTML coding and CSS. You have limited visibility in SEARCH ENGINES too. It is believed that since BlogSpot is by Google hence it enjoys SEO benefits but that's not true. SEO depends on the quality of your blog which includes original useful content, good user experience and your blog design. There are many other SEO aspects but lets not get there.

Conclusion: Blogspot is better than WordPress if you are blogging for passion and OK with limited features.

WordPress--Why and Why Not to Use?

WordPress is a well known CMS based platform for blogging. If you are a serious blogger looking to make money online or branding yourself, WordPress is definitely for you. WordPress is a powerful platform with a focus on web standards & usability and easy to use. Using WordPress, you have complete control on your blog. You can change your blog theme as per your niche. WordPress offers many powerful features like plugins, permalink structure, 3rd party themes, you can add custom scripts if they are compatible with your WordPress version and serves many other advantages. WordPress provides you complete control on the SEO by adding SEO plugins. WordPress SEO by Yoast is my top recommendation which solves your SEO needs. You are responsible for installation of  WordPress on your server, and maintaining your WordPress blog. It may sound technical but WordPress Guide by BlogByGeeks will help you get started with a new blog, installation of WordPress plugins, making you familiar with WordPress Hosting, but you don't get a chance to expand your horizon by learning these things in Blogger. WordPress is an open source software with large community of developers, so if you find any issue you will find a solution to it.

But if you are blogging for passion and write occasionally, and don't want to spend money, Blogspot is the deal. But if you want to promote yourself, WordPress is the answer with no second thought.

Matt Cutts- A Googler, talks about Blogspot or WordPress for SEO

Matt is the lead of Google Web Spam Team, who talks about what Google expect from a website. Google is strict about its policies and your website can be penalized by Google without any prior notice, if you are in breach of the policies.

Matt's reveals that personal choice for blogging is WordPress but he also talks about the simplicity of blogger, easy to get started for casual blogging and perfect for starters to taste a flavour of blogging.

When it comes to SEO advantages, there is no big difference in Blogger and WordPress, But if you are using WordPress, you would want to make your blog SEO friendly because  WordPress default installation is not SEO friendly.

Take some time to make the right decision

Blogspot is good when you are new to blogging industry and want a simple blog to start with, or you blog for passion, or you are an occasional blogger and if you don't know about PHP, CSS and HTML, Blogspot is fantastic for you.

WordPress is definitely more powerful in terms of customization and functionality. If you are thinking to become a professional blogger by creating a business blog to make money online, without a doubt, WordPress should be the obvious choice.

I would suggest you to take some time before making any move. What is your thought in Blogger vs WordPress? Which blogging platform you are using and why?
